EN→TRThe $949 15.6-inch Asus G50VT-X5 certainly looks the part of a gaming laptop, with splashes of color, lights everywhere, an extended keyboard, and a small secondary OLED display. Its components back up those appearances, too, with a 512MB Nvidia GeForce 9800M GS graphics card and adequately powerful 2.13GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 processor--a good set of components for a sub-$1,000 system. The Asus G50VT-X5 offers great gaming performance for under $1,000, but it's missing some basic amenities we've come to expect, and the lightning-bolt design may not appeal to all.

With an elegant design and black-and-orange finish, the Asus G50V resonates style. We put the G50V through its paces. The notebook comes with a backpack and two years warranty. Overall, we liked what we saw of the Asus G50V, and gaming is its only mantra. But, gaming laptops are a rare breed. They cater to a niche that likes to indulge and doesn't mind splurging more on extra performance, given a laptop's form factor. If you are in that niche, the Asus G50V is a worthy contender - but it certainly ain't cheap.

Any motherboard, PC or graphics card with its fishy-looking logo has a good stab at providing gaming performance above the norm. The £1,000 Asus G50 gaming laptop -- the latest to sport the logo -- is aimed at those who want to frag with impunity, safe in the knowledge that their gaming experience won't be interrupted by untimely slowdown. The G50 is an attractive, well-constructed laptop with decent, if hardly stunning performance. It isn't the best gaming laptop we've seen, but its HDMI output and Blu-ray combo player make it a solid Media Center machine.

While the Gateway is heavier and has worse wireless performance, it lasts 42 minutes longer on a charge. But if you dig a profile that more resembles a mainstream computer, and flashing lights for some LAN party wowing, check out the ASUS G50V.
