Overall, the HP Spectre XT is a beautiful laptop, which would look great in your home or workplace. It's packed with great features, and the touchscreen means you can get the most from Windows 8 and its interface - making it one of the best 15-inch Windows 8 machines out there. However, you can get more powerful alternatives for much less, and the dreadful trackpad comes close to ruining the premium allure. A high-quality laptop, but at this price, it should be nigh on perfect.

The $1,349 HP Spectre XT TouchSmart Ultrabook 15t-4000 is a good-looking machine with solid performance, a beautiful 1080p touch- screen display and fairly loud and clean Beats Audio. However, for this price, we would like to see either a full solid state drive or integrated graphics. Although it has a lower-res screen, you can pick up the touch-enabled Dell Inspiron 15z with a similar processor and discrete Nvidia GPU for $250 less than the HP.

HP’s Spectre XT TouchSmart 15-4000ea is certainly an attractive and well-built laptop. However, it does stretch even Intel's vague definition of the term ‘Ultrabook’ to the limit. And beyond. The HP Spectre XT TouchSmart 15-4000ea does have other features that stand out, though. Its touch-sensitive screen feels smooth and responsive when using the Metro interface of Windows 8 – although we still feel that touch-screens are a bit of a gimmick on laptop PCs.

In terms of thickness and weight, this is unquestionably an Ultrabook. But once you open up the Spectre XT TouchSmart and switch it on, it feels like you're working with a larger, beefier notebook that suffers few of the obvious Ultrabook compromises. Connectivity is good, avant-garde even, and the combination of quality keyboard, large trackpad and ultra-responsive touchscreen display makes for very flexible handling. Sure, it's expensive, but quality costs.

Granted, as far as “premium” notebooks go, $1,400 isn’t that high a price. The fancy-schmancy Toshiba Kirabook that we reviewed last month was two grand. And like that one, the Spectre XT comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements, two years of Norton AV, and dedicated support service.

My esteemed colleague Brian Klug tweeted recently that PC manufacturers can't seem to produce anything that doesn't have some horrible flaw. Everything could be perfect except for one thing that was cheaped out on, and it threatens to bring the whole thing down, and unfortunately his assertion holds water here. The Spectre XT TouchSmart has the makings of a solid ultrabook, but it's let down by miserly decisions on HP's part.

HP delivers a 15-inch, high-resolution, touch-screen ultrabook—well, if you allow 5 pounds to qualify as an ultrabook—with Core i7 power at a reasonable price. There's even a Thunderbolt port. What's not to like?

The long-awaited (we first saw it summer 2012) HP Spectre XT TouchSmart is a great all-around 15-inch ultrabook. It has the requisite touch screen, as well as HP's usual combo of decent keyboard and touch pad, and the Beats audio sound system, plus a hard-to-find Thunderbolt port. Still, for $1,299, it's not unreasonable to look for better battery life or even some graphics muscle.

The packed-in video software boosts the system's overall score, since the hobbyist won't have to worry about photo or video editing software. The two-year subscription to Internet Security is also a huge plus. Unfortunately, the extra hours of battery life and performance boost from its SSD give the Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BHI5T the extra points to let it hold on to its crown as out high-end ultrabook Editors' Choice.
