Yet despite our misgivings with the Cell processor, there’s still a lot to love about the G50. Considering the massive screen real estate, it’s pretty good value. The case is gorgeous and rugged, and the speakers actually do a decent job. Even the inclusion of something as simple as IceTV (an Aussie EPG which we’re big fans of) makes us realise that Toshiba is on to something with this theatre PC. And then we remember Toshiba’s stupid decision not to include a Blu-ray drive, and we shake our heads in dismay, wracked with the pain of what could have been. If and when a Blu-ray equipped version arrives, the G50 will be a beast to reckoned with... but until then, there are more capable HD multimedia notebooks on the market.

Attack of the Mammoths: 18.4-inch DTR Shootout!

Having had our fun with all four units, we're hard pressed to actually come up with a clear winner. It's obvious that all four units have a different take on what an 18.4-inch desktop replacement should be and have their own strengths, but it's also obvious they all agree that size is key here. The Acer Aspire Gemstone Blue 8930G here comes out tops in our books for its value and performance, but we didn't quite like its fingerprint magnet surface and glossy screen. Toshiba's Qosmio G50 feels like a traditional desktop replacement, huge and chunky with solid sound, but the dimmer screen was a letdown for sure.

Can the quad-core powerhouse deliver? The Toshiba Qosmio range of high-end multimedia notebooks has always been a little bit different, as it tries to mix unique style with some of the latest mobile technologies around. The Toshiba Qosmio G50-10H is a hulking 5kg in weight and isn’t the kind of machine you’ll want to carry around. The Toshiba Qosmio G50-10H is a great machine and the asking price is fairly reasonable for the specification and features on offer. We enjoyed using it and would have made it a Hot Product but for one fact: no Blu-ray.

With such outstanding style, performance and features, the Toshiba Qosmio G50-10H is very easy to recommend. While the lack of true HD-compatibility is unfortunate, this is still possibly the best multimedia laptop you can buy.

NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT: 8600M GT’nin yeni serisi ve 65nm lik üretim sayesinde kart aynı tüketim oranları ile daha yüksek saat hızına sahip ( tabi ki daha hızlıda). Dahası geliştirilmiş video işlemcisine (VP3) ve enerji tasarrufu için (9100M G ile kullanıldığında) HybridPower desteğine sahip.

Oyun oynamak isteyen kullanıcılar için en son seçenek. Yeni oyunlar bu kartlarda çalışacaktır, ama sadece düşük detaylar ve orta çözünürlükte.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Daha fazla tüketime ihtiyaç duymayan ve daha uzun aktarım hatlarına sahip Core Duo ve Core Solo işlemcilerin yeni nesli. Core Duo dizanynına ek olarak 4. bir decoder, güçlendirilmiş SSE unitesi ve ek Aritmetik mantık ünitesi ( ALU ) mevcut.

Core 2 Duo Laptop işlemcileri masa üstü işlemcilerle benzer. Sadece daha düşük voltaj ile çalışmakta (0.95 Volt - 1188 Volt) ve daha düşük frontside bus saat hızına sahip (1066 MHz karşı 667 MHz). Aynı hıza sahip olsalarda laptop Core 2 Duo işlemcileri masa üstü versiyonlarına oranla daha düşük frontside bus ve yavaş hard disklerinden ötürü 20 - 25% daha yavaş.

T9400: Core 2 Duo P9500 ile aynı performansa ama daha yüksek güç tüketimine sahip işlemci.

18.4": Notebooklar için bu boyutta ekran formatı 2006’dan beri dev masa üstü değişim laptopları için kullanılmakta ancak fazla tercih edilmemekte. Bu büyüklükten daha büyük 20 inçlik ekranlar bulunmakta.

Masa üstü değişim laptoplarını taşımak zor, fazla çaba gerektirmekte. Ama öte yandan yazılar kolayca okunabiliyor ve yüksek çözünürlükler sorun oluşturmuyor. Masa üstü değişim laptopları daha çok elektrik ve ağırlık sorununun önemsiz olduğu sabit kullanımlar için ideal.
