For those looking for a small laptop at a good price, there are few that offer as much as the Dell Inspiron 14. It packs a lot of power in its standard configuration but we believe that most consumers will find some upgrades preferable to the base unit. Dell's Inspiron 14 is their middle sized budget laptop system with a 14-inch screen to help keep its size down. While the pricing can be very attractive, Dell made a few interesting choices when it comes to the system to keep the prices low. Of course, Dell offers a wide range of upgrades on custom orders but these will quickly add to the price and can push the systems cost well past many similarly equipped laptops. The system is functional but best serves those that need specific features.

While many laptop buyers will gravitate toward specialty machines--such as a tiny Netbook for travel or a massive desktop replacement for gaming or video editing--there are still plenty of people who need a traditional midsize laptop. We call these 14-, 15-, and 16-inch systems members of the "mainstream" category, and they are the workhorse backbones of the laptop biz. Dell's middle-of-the-road Inspiron 14 offers a decent low-cost mainstream Core 2 Duo package, but we would have liked better battery life and more graphics options.

The Dell Inspiron 14 is a no frills budget portable laptop. I can’t find a lot wrong with it for the price. The major complaints would be the fact there are no newer digital output ports such as HDMI, no status indicator lights other than power, the look is pretty plain and finally if you configure a Core 2 Duo processor the price quickly jumps. Positives include that the weight and size are good and you get an optical drive and media card reader that are missing from the more expensive studio 14z. If you’re considering the Dell Inspiron 14 you should also check out reviews of the HP dv4t 14-inch laptop and Dell Studio 14z 14-inch laptop.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: GM45 çipsetine (Montevina) kurulmuş, onboard (paylaşımlı) grafik kartı. 2 adet daha fazla shadera sahip olması ve daha yüksek saat hızından ötürü GMA X3100 den oldukça hızlı. Yinede oyuncular için (DirectX 10 oyunları oynanamaz, oynansa bile çok düşük detaylarda) önerilebilir olduğu söylenemez. Dahili video işlemcisi, düşük hızlı işlemcilere HD video decode (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) işlemleri sırasında yardımcı olarak Blu-Ray medyaların akıcı şekilde oynatılmasını sağlıyor.

Sadece eski oyunlar bu grafik kartları ile akıcı bir şekilde (eğer yüksek bir sistem gereksinimi duymuyorlarsa) oynanabilir. Bu kategorideki paylaşımlı grafik çekirdekleri az ısınma ve daha uzun batarya ömrü gibi avantajlara sahip. Ofis, internet, şekil düzenleme ve video editleme gibi işlemler herhangi bir kısıtlama olmadan bu grafik kartları ile yapılabilir.

Intel Pentium Dual Core: Yonah çekirdeği olmasına rağmen, Pentium adının dönüşü oldu. Aslında çok iyi bir güç tüketimi oranıyla 2 çekirdekli bir işlemcinin uyumundan oluşmakta.

T4200: Giriş sınıfı 1MB Level 2 Cache sahip, sanallaştırma teknolojisinden yoksun işlemci. Core 2 Duo sınıfı ile kıyaslanıldığında bazı güç tasarrufu mekanizmaları deaktifleştirilmiş.
