Toshiba’s laptop division turned into Dynabook a couple of years ago, but the X40-J range is the first to introduce a change in the overall design. It retains an attractive if understated dark-blue finish, but there are now thin silver outlines on the power key and trackpad. These match the silver metal hinge, which stretches almost the entire width. Also, while it sticks to a familiar aluminium chassis, the plastic base has a classy pinstripe effect. If you’re a mobile professional looking to outfit your team with a solid, durable laptop that looks good and gets the job done, the Dynabook Portege X40-K is a solid choice for your mobile productivity employees. Thanks to its Core i7 processor, it serves up a good performance and its lightweight chassis makes working on the go a seamless, easy experience. And we’re never going to say no to a comfortable keyboard. However, for the price. I’d expect a display with better brightness and color accuracy as well as a faster SSD and slightly longer battery life. And if you do a lot of video conference calls, you’re going to need to purchase an external webcam. If those things are important, we’d recommend taking a hard look at the Dell Latitude 9420 2-in-1, which is available for $1,459 on Amazon(opens in new tab). Overall, the Dynabook Portege X40K is a solid business travelers’ laptop meant for document pushers who need all-day battery life and a lightweight, easy-on-the-eyes system that will keep up with most workflows on the go.

The Protege X40 is meant for data workers and as such the paltry Iris Xe graphics are great for short burst of GPU heavy lifting in specific applications but is not great for gaming or content editing. With Intel's i7, 12 cores and up to 64GB or memory, users will be choosing to fly through macros-laden Excel docs, excessively large PDFs, multi-gigabyte PowerPoint presentations and several opened Edge and Chrome instances with multiple open tabs, over playing the latest AAA game.

On the whole, Dynabook’s Portégé X40 is a solid pick for a business PC. However you define work, this blue laptop has plenty of oomph to take care of your business. Its solid build quality, fast i7 chip, plentiful ports, and three year standard on-site repair warranty tip this over the edge, making it a package worth considering. Whether it’s a tax write off for your side hustle or an upgrade for your business, the X40 should stay capable for at least the three years it’s covered by the standard warranty, giving you great peace of mind up front.

I was positively surprised at a lot of what Dynabook did with the Portégé X40L-K. It’s a very nice-looking laptop that’s also very light and easy to carry, it has a tall display perfectly suited for productivity work, and one of the best keyboards I’ve used. It even has a very loud speaker system, which I did;t expect to be a focus on a business laptop. Performance is also solid, and battery life, while not great, is a bit more tolerable than other machines I’ve reviewed.

90% I commuted with this laptop for a week, and its power, robustness, and connectivity didn't fail to impress

At the end of the test, I was once again impressed with the processing and, to be honest, the GPU power afforded to the Dynabook Portégé X40-M by the Intel Core Ultra 5. It's able to handle Windows 11 Pro as well as any machine that I've tried, and when it came to Microsoft Office apps from Word to PowerPoint and Excel, this machine was highly optimised, producing one of the best benchmark results that I have seen for the Windows Experience, coming in at 8.3. Most media editing was also extremely well handled, and Photoshop and Lightroom ran surprisingly well, with both opening quickly and enabling quite advanced image edits as well as batched commands without too much of an issue. Having a dedicated GPU might have sped up the process, but if this is all you have to use, then you'll still be impressed by the performance.
