This model falls short of a Recommended award due to the uncertainty over screen quality; all the models I’ve seen on sale so far include the untested 250cd/m² screen. But if your HP reseller can supply a 400cd/m² screen, or speed is of greater value to you than image quality, the price and performance combine to form a compelling proposition.

The laptop has a strong selection of ports and is quite upgradable (even the RAM!). It has USB-C, optional 4G LTE-A, Wi-Fi 6, a fingerprint scanner and Windows Hello IR camera. It competes with the Lenovo ThinkPad T14s.

The EliteBook 845 fits the bill for less than $1,500, which is at least $500 less than you’d expect to pay for an equivalent machine with an Intel processor.
