MSI Katana GF66 review – entry-level gaming will never be the same

Out of the three MSI laptops we’ve tested with the 11th Generation Intel processors, the Katana GF66 happens to have the best battery life. Although all three have the same 53.5Wh unit inside. We got 5 hours and 48 minutes of Web browsing, and about 4 hours and a half of video playback. In order to achieve these results, however, we’ve gone as far as changing the CPU fan curve. We noticed that by default, the processor fan was always spinning. Thankfully, MSI Center makes it pretty easy to tinker with this stuff. Just go to “User scenarios”, then choose “Advanced” on fan control, and drag the dot that corresponds to the cool temperature all the way down to 0%. This means your fan will only start spinning after your CPU has heated up a bit, which is completely harmless and harnesses a bit more screen-on time.

At this point, you might think this is a negative review. IT IS NOT. I must clarify that MSI has done nothing wrong with the decision to go with RTX 3050 Ti and RTX 3050 for the GF66 series. The laptop itself is well built and the overall user experience has been positive without any hiccups. It is just how the industry moves forward with the latest selection of chip. PCMark10 clearly shows the pairing of 11th Gen Intel and RTX 30 series card is still beneficial to the overall user experience. I just wanted to point out that NVIDIA’s promise for ray tracing experience might cause disappointment when customers thought their entry-range RTX card can produce magical results. Generally, I think the RT cores in the RTX 3050 Ti is only useful in less demanding titles or if the user is trying out ray tracing in their own software or games development.

Our MSI Katana GF66 review for the Philippine market is a pretty mixed bag. On the one hand, it’s pretty competitively priced (considering the other options at the market as of press time) at a hair below Php 70K for the unit we reviewed. Its screen is fairly ok, and anyone looking for a laptop to play competitive FPS games will be happy with the fast 144Hz refresh rate. On the other hand, the RTX 3050 GPU struggles to deliver 60FPS gaming with modern titles at max graphical settings, which means you’ll have to turn down the graphics on your favorite games to get that 60FPS target. Of course, you can leverage the power of NVIDIA’s ray-tracing tech, though obviously, not all games support it.

Especially when we compare results to the Stealth 15M we reviewed recently. Though in fairness, the chassis of the Katana GF66 is 8mm’s thicker providing more cooling potential and the core and thread count of the CPU’s on offer is doubled in the Katana GF66’s favour, with 8-cores 16-threads vs 4-cores 8-threads.

Yes, it bears a more aggressive design but if you can look past that, it’s a superior device through and through. Not to mention, the Helios 300 has a much better QHD screen with 100% DCI-P3 color coverage as well.

MSI Katana GF66 11UD is an example of a well-balanced gaming laptop that is capable of offering a sufficient level of performance for the segment, albeit not a record. At the same time, it managed not to fail in many other aspects. Thus, the user has his hands free for the future upgrade of individual internal components, the laptop has a sufficient number of ports, as well as a keyboard suitable for all tasks. Of course, the situation with the display turned out to be twofold. On the one hand, the refresh rate of 144 Hz is a nice feature of the device, but the picture quality itself is average, which is why the laptop can not be recommended for more or less substantial work with images or videos, if we are not talking about an external monitor, of course. The rest makes it a quite normal, versatile device. Well, those, who feels that bundle of Intel Core i5-11400H processor and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 Ti video card is not enough, can always consider options MSI Katana GF66 with more powerful graphics adapters. As we found out, there are a lot of them and it will be possible to pick up something more powerful.

In fact, there's no way around it, the MSI Katana GF66 has plenty of downsides. The screen quality is mediocre – at best – aside from the refresh rate. The battery life is atrocious and charging options feel archaic. Physical port connectivity is out of touch with the 2022 market. And the glaringly cheap chassis construction leaves plenty to be desired. But, if you are looking for a cost-effective gaming laptop that is simply going to sit there and push pixels from your favourite games onto the high refresh rate 1080p screen, MSI’s Katana GF66 will do a reasonable job. It’s not fancy or finesse, but its hardware is cooled well and the 12th Gen Intel CPU will appeal to many. At £1399 though, there are better options on the market. Particularly the Ryzen 7- and RTX 3070-powered Lenovo Legion 5 or Acer Nitro 5, or the Ryzen 9 and RTX 3070 Gigabyte Aorus A5 X1, or the Ryzen 9 and RX 6800M ASUS ROG STRIX G15.
