The X420 is a decent ultraportable -- impressively light with great battery life, but also quite expensive. With some more powerful components and a higher build quality the price would seem more appropriate, but as it is, the X420 is hard to recommend over a high-end netbook or a more powerful thin-and-light laptop

Going by the number of slimline ultraportables around at the moment, Intel has really been pushing its Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage platform. That's no bad thing, since it allows the likes of Samsung's X420 to bridge the gap between the upper echelons of netbook society and expensive ultraportables. Samsung's X420 is slim, light and relatively inexpensive, but it's far from perfect.

The Samsung X120 ULV ultraportable was by far our favourite laptop of 2009, but not everyone wants something that’s quite so compact. So, if you don’t fancy squinting at an 11.6” screen, the X420 may be for you. It’s the next model up in Samsung’s X Series and while the specification is broadly similar to the X120, the X420 has a 14” screen and much better battery life. There’s a lot to like about the Samsung X420 and if you like the look of the X120, but worry about its small screen, this is an excellent — and almost as portable — alternative.

There's little to fault the X420 in terms of build quality and hardware. It's light, sexy and quite a performer. In retrospect, its glossy lid might be a haven for fingerprints, though it does lend a touch of class to its overall aesthetics compared to the prototype's matte cover. Also, the 16:9 screen is satisfactorily bright and sharp to suit your needs, whether it's for office applications or movie playback. Not to mention the notebook also comes with a HDMI port should you prefer to blow up your HD clips onto a larger screen or TV.

It is stands for ‘ultra-low voltage’ and, in essence, it refers to a computer processor that is power efficient, which is great for laptops and other mobile gadgets. Our only qualm was that the built-in speakers are a little weedy. Still, there is an audio output socket so a pair of headphones or speakers can be connected. With all of the impressive credentials of the X420 we reckon Samsung has a winner on its hands.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: GM45 çipsetine (Montevina) kurulmuş, onboard (paylaşımlı) grafik kartı. 2 adet daha fazla shadera sahip olması ve daha yüksek saat hızından ötürü GMA X3100 den oldukça hızlı. Yinede oyuncular için (DirectX 10 oyunları oynanamaz, oynansa bile çok düşük detaylarda) önerilebilir olduğu söylenemez. Dahili video işlemcisi, düşük hızlı işlemcilere HD video decode (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) işlemleri sırasında yardımcı olarak Blu-Ray medyaların akıcı şekilde oynatılmasını sağlıyor.

Sadece eski oyunlar bu grafik kartları ile akıcı bir şekilde (eğer yüksek bir sistem gereksinimi duymuyorlarsa) oynanabilir. Bu kategorideki paylaşımlı grafik çekirdekleri az ısınma ve daha uzun batarya ömrü gibi avantajlara sahip. Intel Pentium Dual Core: Yonah çekirdeği olmasına rağmen, Pentium adının dönüşü oldu. Aslında çok iyi bir güç tüketimi oranıyla 2 çekirdekli bir işlemcinin uyumundan oluşmakta.

SU4100: Küçük subnotebooklarda kullanılan, giriş seviyesi işlemci. Pentium adındna ötürü işlemci Core 2 Duo işlemcilere kıyasla daha az güç tasarrufu modlarına sahip olabilir.
