Origin’S Eon14-S Laptop Has Great Gaming Performance For Less—If You Don’T Need A High-Resolution Display

The Origin EON14-S gaming laptop’s build quality is so-so, we wish its screen had a larger resolution or, at least, as a configuration option, and its multicore performance is only average. But for gaming, exclusively, this laptop screams—top-shelf performance for a mid-tier price, saving you hundreds of dollars compared to some of its competition. The EON14-S gets other essentials right, too: plenty of USB-A and USB-C ports, support for Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6E (the current, fastest Wi-Fi standard), and an RTX 4070 GPU, the exact last-gen graphics card we'd recommend if you're serious about gaming on your laptop and saving money. The storage capacity options are robust, too, which is great if you need a large SSD because you want to play a ton of beefy games, like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

The Origin EON14-S is difficult to sum up concisely. On the one hand, its screen, speakers and overall build aren't exactly premium. But on the other hand, the processor and graphics chip are; delivering fast, smooth and stable performance, whether you're playing games, using 3D software or doing everyday tasks. If performance is a priority for you, then, this has a lot to offer, for a much more affordable price than, say, the Razer Blade 17, Asus Rog or even something like the MacBook Pro 16-inch (2023). On the flip side, luxurious it is not, the display is just okay, and the audio is subpar. In short, this isn't anywhere close to being the best gaming laptop. But for some, it might be the best one for the price, especially if you typically play highly resource-intensive games and want something that's more than capable of keeping up.

I’d wager a good chunk (if not the majority) of gaming laptop decisions happen without ever seeing the laptop in person. In that context, the EON14-S looks very enticing. It offers great specs and undercuts the competition, but there’s a lot more to a laptop than just the specs alone. Although the EON14-S isn’t a straight-up bad laptop, it’s not a good one, either. It compromises in too many areas, even accounting for its lower price.
