The line between netbooks and laptops continues to blur, with screen sizes from 9-inch up to 15-inch in the mix and performance specifications with a similarly wide range. Packard Bell sees its dot s and dot m as mainstream netbooks and the larger of the two, the dot m reviewed here, has an 11.6-inch widescreen LCD and runs on a 1.2GHz, 64-bit Athlon L110 processor with 2GB memory. This is a great little machine, though more a small notebook than an oversized netbook. Vista doesn't hold it back much and the extra memory and strong ATI graphics help with this. However, if you can afford the six-cell battery, go for it, or stay fairly close to a power socket all the time.

Bigger than your regular netbook, the Packard Bell dot m/a offers AMD processors and an 11.6in screen. Breaking away from the pack, the Packard Bell dot m/a has a bigger screen and a potentially faster processor, not to mention a graphics chip that can handle simple games if you drop the quality settings. A generous battery pack is always welcome, although actual runtime is reduced here by the inefficient processors, when compared to an Intel chipset.

In its basic form, the dot m/a is let down badly by its farcically poor battery life but if you can lay hands on one with the six-cell battery for a reasonable price then you will have a very nice machine and one that represents decent value for money. A 10.1in screen Samsung netbook like the NC10 or N110 will set you back between £300 and £350, and neither has the hi-res screen or 2GB of memory of the m/a.

Will Packard Bell's smallest netbook offer big performance? The dot s is Packard Bell's 10.1-inch netbook. Unlike its larger brothers, the dot m and dot m/a, it stays safely in known netbook territory by featuring an Intel Atom processor and running Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. As with the dot m, the sample we reviewed was a pre-production unit so we were not able to provide full benchmarking results, such as battery life testing. While the Packard Bell dot s doesn't really bring anything new to the netbook market, it is a well-rounded machine that should be on most people's list of machines to check out before making a purchase. As long as the touchpad issues are rectified, we are big fans.

Essentially the dot m/a, but from an alternate reality. Packard Bell's second 11.6-inch netbook, the dot m, shares exactly the same chassis as the dot m/a, but differs internally by carrying an Intel Atom processor and running Windows XP software. While the keyboard may not reach the standard we expect, all in all, the Packard Bell dot m proves a great netbook. The screen in particular is fantastic and this machine is certainly worth a look.

Packard Bell has relaunched itself, now under the wing of Acer, and for the first time has brought two netbook models to the UK. Hold the front page -- it's a netbook without an Intel Atom CPU! The Packard Bell dot m/a, also known in some circles as the Gateway LT3100, does away with the Intel norm in favour of an AMD Athlon L110 CPU. It also plumps for a larger-than-usual 11.6-inch screen and a slightly wider chassis, pushing it dangerously near laptop territory. The Packard Bell dot m/a is a good netbook, particularly for anyone seeking a larger screen than normal. It's slightly bigger than many of its rivals and its battery life is merely average, but it has an excellent keyboard and would make for a great second computer.

While the Valentino Rossi branding won't suit all tastes, underneath the Dot VR46 is a great little laptop and one that's very easy to recommend. Its specifi cation and price confirm that it's certainly not a netbook, but as a slim and light CULV portable, this is one of the best.

With a Valentino Rossi (moto GP champion) decor, the Packard Bell dot VR46 is an original looking ultra-portable laptop. This "Valentino Rossi edition" is a nice surprise. Apart from its both original and rather undaring design, the Packard Bell dot m/u gives good performance and decent battery life. It lacks a good screen and graphics solution worthy of the name.

Packard Bell:

Packard Bell, Tayvan kökenli Acer firmasının alt şirketlerinden biridir. 2 farklı elektronik firma tarafından adı kullanılmaktadır. İlki 1926 yılında kurulan Amerikalı bir radyo üreticisidir. 1987 yılında Teledyne şirketi satın almış, 1986 yılında da yatırımcılar isim hakkını yeni bir kişisel bilgisayar üreticisi için almışlardır. Başlangıçta firma ABD için düşük fiyatlı bilgisayarlar üretsede, sonrasında ürünler Avrupa pazarınada sunulmuştur. NEC şirketi 90ların sonunda satın almış, Acer da 2008 yılında şirketi bünyesine katmıştır. İsimlerindeki benzerliğe rağmen orjinal Packard Bell veya şu anki Packard Bell ile Hewlett Packard veya Bell Systems arasında bir bağlantı bulunmamaktadır. Packard Bell uluslararası bir notebook üreticisi olup, çok az bir pazar payı ve hakkında birkaç adet incelemeye sahiptir. Günümüze kadar şirket daha çok sağlam kasalı laptoplar üzerine yoğunlaşmıştır.

Bu tür grafik kaetları oyunlar için pek ideal değil. Eğer bir oyunu çalıştıracak olurlarsa ya grafiksel hatalarla ya da düşük frame oranlarıyla çalıştırabilirler. Oyuncular için uygun değiller. Ofis ve internet ise oyunların aksine bu GPU lar için sorun değil.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 ( aynı zamanda GMA 950 olarakta bilinir) Intelin 915 GM chipset’i için ürettiği onboard entegre grafik kartı modeli. GMA 900’ün saat hızı arttırılmış versiyonu ve donanımsal hesaplamaları (Transform ve Lightning) desteklememekte ( bazı oyunlar için gerekli özellik).

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Dahili (paylaşımlı bellekli) Intel Atom N4xx serisi işlemcilerde kullanılan grafik kartı. Eski GMA 950lere nazaran biraz daha hızlı ve bu yüzden 3D oyunlar veya HD videolar için uygun değil (sadece MPEG2 desteği mevcut)

Sadece eski oyunlar bu grafik kartları ile akıcı bir şekilde (eğer yüksek bir sistem gereksinimi duymuyorlarsa) oynanabilir. Bu kategorideki paylaşımlı grafik çekirdekleri az ısınma ve daha uzun batarya ömrü gibi avantajlara sahip. Ofis, internet, şekil düzenleme ve video editleme gibi işlemler herhangi bir kısıtlama olmadan bu grafik kartları ile yapılabilir.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: GM45 çipsetine (Montevina) kurulmuş, onboard (paylaşımlı) grafik kartı. 2 adet daha fazla shadera sahip olması ve daha yüksek saat hızından ötürü GMA X3100 den oldukça hızlı. Yinede oyuncular için (DirectX 10 oyunları oynanamaz, oynansa bile çok düşük detaylarda) önerilebilir olduğu söylenemez. Dahili video işlemcisi, düşük hızlı işlemcilere HD video decode (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2) işlemleri sırasında yardımcı olarak Blu-Ray medyaların akıcı şekilde oynatılmasını sağlıyor.

Intel Atom:

Intel Atom serisi 64-Bit bir işlemci olup UMPC ve MID türü gibi küçük notebooklar için ucuz bir işlemci alternatifidir. Yeni mimarinin özelliği “in order” uygulamasını kullanması. Böylece transistor sayısı azaltılıp, daha ucuz bir üretim mümkün.

N270: Güç tasarruflu, ucuz ce yavaş tek çekirdekli netbook işlemcisi. Performansı aynı saat hızına sahip Core Solo veya Celeron M işlemcilere oranla daha kötü.

N450: GMA 3150 GPU ve dahili bellek kontrolörüne sahip Netbooklar için üretilen Intel Atom serisi işlemci. Sistem performansı Atom N280 / GMA 950 kombinasyonundan sadece biraz daha hızlı.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Daha fazla tüketime ihtiyaç duymayan ve daha uzun aktarım hatlarına sahip Core Duo ve Core Solo işlemcilerin yeni nesli. Core Duo dizanynına ek olarak 4. bir decoder, güçlendirilmiş SSE unitesi ve ek Aritmetik mantık ünitesi ( ALU ) mevcut.

Core 2 Duo Laptop işlemcileri masa üstü işlemcilerle benzer. Sadece daha düşük voltaj ile çalışmakta (0.95 Volt - 1188 Volt) ve daha düşük frontside bus saat hızına sahip (1066 MHz karşı 667 MHz). Aynı hıza sahip olsalarda laptop Core 2 Duo işlemcileri masa üstü versiyonlarına oranla daha düşük frontside bus ve yavaş hard disklerinden ötürü 20 - 25% daha yavaş.

SU7300: 10 Watt gibi düşük bir güç tüketimine sahip düşük saat hızlı işlemci.
