Tricky one this. There’s no denying it, this is an excellent phone when it comes to the cameras, the screen and the GUI. It’s a different form-factor, that’s for sure, but I’m not going to berate them too much for that as there’ll definitely be lots of you out there who will love the tall and almost remote-control-like appearance of this device. However, what I will say is that, in this world of “all screen” phone frontages and multiple use cases, it’s a hard sell for Sony to say, “We’re doing this complete letterbox design because that’s how movies are formatted”. Sure, movies look great on the phone and there’s no black bars, but what about for the rest of the time, when your thumb doesn’t reach high enough and you have to employ one of those work-arounds that Sony has put in place to let you use the phone with one-hand?

For a mid-range device, both the Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus are interesting choices. The 21:9 aspect ratio makes them unique, but I don’t know if it’s enough to make you want to choose these over others in the market. If you were to go with one of these, I’d choose the Xperia 10 Plus over the smaller sibling mainly due to the slightly better specs, larger screen, and better cameras. I really see no reason why the smaller Xperia 10 exists to be honest.

If you watch a lot of films and TV on your phone and want a good-performing phone with no notch then the Xperia 10 Plus is a decent mid-range option. There’s zero wow factor here, though. It’s also quite expensive for the performance and build quality – if you’re not fussed by the odd 21:9 aspect ratio then you should save money and get the Moto G7 Plus or much more powerful Pocophone F1 instead.

For a mid-range device, both the Sony Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus are interesting choices. The 21:9 aspect ratio makes them unique, but I don’t know if it’s enough to make you want to choose these over others in the market. If you were to go with one of these, I’d choose the Xperia 10 Plus over the smaller sibling mainly due to the slightly better specs, larger screen, and better cameras. I really see no reason why the smaller Xperia 10 exists to be honest.

We understand the rationale behind a 21:9 screen - the narrower body should be easier to reach across, while the elongated aspect still allows for a lot to be shown in one screen - especially for vertically scrolling apps. Sony hasn’t released a budget phone globally in 2021, but the mid-range Xperia 10 III feels like it should be significantly more affordable. It sticks with a 60Hz display, while most phones shift to 90Hz or even 120Hz. There are still some fairly noticeable bezels too, which definitely aren't to everyone's tastes. The cameras are also extremely patchy, with charging speeds out of the box painfully slow. That’s not to say the Xperia 10 III doesn’t get anything right – far from it. Performance is fine and extends to mobile gaming, while battery life is among the best you’ll find anywhere. It still looks and feels like a premium handset, and the simple software experience is enjoyable. But Sony’s cautious spec sheet and comparatively high price tag means the Xperia 10 III needed to nail the basics. It simply doesn’t do that, making the phone hard to recommend.

The classic, characteristic for Sony design may be liked or seem secondary, but the 5G network support or significant improvements compared to its predecessor are definitely a good direction in the series evolution. The biggest advantages of the reviewed Xperia are the screen, IP65 / 68 certification, Gorilla Glass 6, compact housing and great battery life. However, the device's efficiency and photo quality are at an average level, which, combined with a relatively high price - 430 euros - makes it not a particularly profitable proposition. The biggest competition for this model will be Samsung Galaxy A52 5G, POCO F3, OnePlus Nord and Mi 11 Lite 5G.

However, the Xperia has its fair share of advantages over the competition. Starting with the physical, the Xperia is one of the most compact devices you can find in the midrange. More importantly, it has full IP65/IP68 dust and water protection - best in class weather sealing.

Its chipset is more at home in devices that cost at least £70 less than the Xperia 10 V will, while that 60Hz refresh rate is outclassed by plenty of cheaper options, including most of the affordable Motorola phones announced earlier this year. There are, however, some bright spots: the battery will likely prove to be one of the most enduring on the market, the design is incredibly light for what the phone offers and the extra attention given to the camera suite certainly sounds promising. The Sony Xperia 10 IV showed outstanding autonomy across all our tests. In default mode, it had one of the longest typical usage scenarios we’ve tested to date, and it had one of the best autonomy results in the on-the-go tests, especially when scrolling on social apps. When tested in calibrated mode, the device performed very well, having excellent autonomy whatever the use case. Charging the device’s large 5000 mAh battery to its full capacity lasted 2 hours and 36 minutes because of the small charger. A 5-minute charge boost only yielded an average 3 hours and 24 minutes of autonomy. The charge efficiency was poor, and the residual consumption of the charger when the device was fully charged and still plugged in was above average. But the efficiency of the charger itself was average, and its residual consumption when the device was not plugged in was very low, consuming very little power from the outlet. When it came to discharge efficiency, the Sony Xperia 10 IV drained very low discharge currents across all our use cases, meaning that the device was well-optimized. Compared to devices from the same price range ($400 – $599), the Sony Xperia 10 IV’s global score places it near the top of the segment, while its autonomy score takes the top spot. The device also has among the best scores in efficiency for the segment. But its very low charging score, pulled down by the lowest full-charge subscore we have in our database so far, kept it from doing better in the segment.

Its main camera and zoom capabilities will serve you well, though if night photography and wideangle photography are more your bag, you’ll want to look elsewhere, like the formidable (and cheaper) Google Pixel 6a. That makes the Xperia 10 IV sound like a hard sell, and for most people, it is. If you’re still drawn to its design and positive features after reading this review though, then chances are you’ll get along with it just fine.

Mid-range phones are always a matter of priorities, and in the Xperia 10 IV Sony has made some unusual choices. Like the Xperia 10 III before it, the phone feels somewhat overpriced, with a low-end processor, an underwhelming main camera, and a disappointing 60Hz display. On the other hand, the Xperia 10 IV is unusually water-resistant, has a dedicated telephoto camera, and has the best battery life in its class. Overall, Sony still hasn’t quite managed to hit upon a mid-market formula that will sing to most people. Not in such a competitive market, that’s for sure, and not for the money it’s asking.

The main drawback was that the phone, which falls into DXOMARK’s High-end segment, was unable read HDR10 video and lacked UHD support. On the positive side, video playback was smooth, with no frame drops. The Sony Xperia 10 IV screen was suitable for night-time reading, and it displayed pleasant colors when used indoors. But when used outdoors in the default settings, brightness was not sufficient for any use case. Touch fluidity on the screen was limited when browsing the web, gaming or just navigating the gallery app.

Once again, we're parting ways with an Xperia 10 not knowing what to make of it. It's expensive for what its specs suggest, and the phone-only box contents don't help make you feel you're getting your money's worth either. The lack of 4K video recording when the previous installment supported it is an odd consequence of the 5G times we live in, but we reckon it could have been avoided with a different choice of chipset, which would have also improved performance numbers. The fact that the display only supports 60Hz refresh rate is inexcusable at this point, and stereo speakers have all but become the norm even in the upper midrange and the 10 IV misses out on those as well. It's not without its strong points, though, the Mark 4. Unrivaled, almost excessive battery life is the first that comes to mind, and having that in a package as light and compact as this tall 6-incher is certainly going to be enough to attract a whole bunch of buyers. As usual, that body is also dust and water-sealed - a notch better than most, even.

Yeah, definitely, if you want a solid phone with maybe the best battery life in this price category, a top-grade 6-inch AMOLED display and snappy performance, by all means - go for it. If you absolutely need a faster refresh rate on your smartphone screen, and you also aim for the best camera experience out there, then you should probably look elsewhere. Truth be told, the Xperia 10 IV is a nice evolution and a pleasant device to hold and use but the price is slowly creeping out of the comfortable budget segment that this phone thrives in. And up there there are a lot of nice phones to consider. It also seems that all Xperia models have contracted the same illness characterized with a raise in price rather than in temperature. Whether or not it will prove problematic or potentially incurable, only time will tell.

As light levels drop image quality also drops dramatically. There’s also a lack of consistency between shots, in exposure and colour reproduction, so it is often a case of picking the best of several shots to get a good one. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to see why anyone would choose this phone over a Samsung, Google Pixel, or any of the other brands available. There are too many things on this phone that simply aren’t competitive with what’s out there.

70% Xperia 10 V Review: Sony Missed the Mark for a Sub-$500 Phone

Looking at the results based on my review, I do not understand why other reviewers give the Xperia 10 V such high scores. Okay, Sony impressed me in terms of build quality and included features like a microSD slot and a 3.5 mm headphone jack untouched. And yes, the Xperia 10 V fills an exciting niche with its lightweight form factor and 21:9 screen format. However, the Xperia 10 V is disappointing for a phone that resides in the $500 range. That is not my personal opinion, but the result of a quick look at the competition. The triple camera left much to be desired with its tiny sensors, both during the day and at night. The limited video resolution of 1080p is also a relic from older times. The phone looks just as antiquated in terms of quick-charging as well as the display, which has a maximum refresh rate of 60 Hz.

Despite dedicated ultra-wide and tele cameras, the Sony’s zoom capabilities were fairly limited, with a lack of detail and a limited dynamic range that resulted in highlight clipping across the entire zoom range. Video quality lagged behind stills. While in bright light, colors were nice, there was a lack of detail as well as exposure instabilities in pretty much all recording conditions. Video stabilization was ineffective, too, resulting in noticeable camera shake.
