The Dell Studio 17 performed very well as a multimedia-oriented desktop-replacement notebook. The system includes everything you might want, including great speakers, very nice screen options, a fast processor, and a very capable graphics card. Compared to the ASUS G51J or Acer 8940G which offer NVIDIA 260M and 250M cards respectively, the Studio 17 does fall behind in gaming performance with its lower performing ATI Mobility Radeon 4650

Although it costs a reasonable $1,164, the Dell Studio 17 has the power of a much more expensive notebook: a blazing quad-core Intel Core i7 processor that’s perfect for multitaskers and multimedia fiends, a full gigabyte of dedicated graphics memory, a fast, 7,200-rpm hard drive, and a nine-cell battery that outlasts other desktop replacements. Sure, you’ll get a more refined design and even stronger performance as you move up to more tricked-out systems, but the Studio 17 delivers a lot of value.

Dell's Studio 17 packs a big screen for a big peformance - pity on the big price

Our review model Dell 17 came with an eyewateringly green lid - it comes in a range of colours, and we were apparently sent the ‘puréed frog' model. Joking aside, the Studio is a good-looking system. Make no mistake, the Studio 17 is an excellent laptop, but Dell's exquisite design is again undermined by price.

Dell has managed to walk a fine line between price and performance with this machine. You can upgrade but at this price you don’t get extras like Blu-ray, just a standard DVD rewriter, but for a family orientated notebook you won’t find any compromises. It manages to pack in the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 3GB of RAM and a whopping 320GB hard drive and still be affordable. There is even a dedicated gaming card, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650, so you’ll be able to play games with ease. We really like this machine – it’s powerful, portable and for the configuration isn’t about to cost the earth.

Dell has taken full advantage of the Studio 17’s larger footprint by packing it with ports and connectors; it comes with five USB 2.0 ports, HDMI, FireWire, VGA, infrared, ExpressCard, and an eight-in-one memory card reader on-board, as well as an external USB RJ45 modem jack for those still clinging to dial-up. Otherwise, the 802.11n Wi-Fi and Gigabit Ethernet covers standard network and Internet connectivity, and you can add built-in mobile broadband as an optional extra. To top it all off, Dell also throws in a two-year next business day parts and labour warranty.

The Studio 17 is by no means as attractive or desirable as an XPS laptop (excluding the gaming XPSs, they're pig-ugly), but it is slightly more appealing than an Inspiron. With that in mind, it achieves its objective: to be cheaper than an XPS without sacrificing too much in the way of looks. Laptops such as the Asus M70 offer more in the way of storage and connectivity, but the Studio 17 just about holds its own.

All things said and done, the Dell Studio 17 is the most impressive 17-inch consumer notebook we've seen so far this year. The build quality, range of customizable options, expandability, style, and price make this an excellent choice if you're in the market for a 17-inch notebook. Still, we would have liked to see more graphics card options than just the integrated Intel X3100 and dedicated ATI Radeon HD 3650. While issues like lack of VGA cable screw posts, dedicated docking station connector, or lack of a simple RAM expansion cover might prevent some buyers from purchasing this notebook, there's a lot to like about this notebook. The Studio 17 has virtually every cool feature you'd want in a 17-inch notebook ... with the exception of a built-in TV tuner. Bottom line, you'll be hard pressed to find a better 17-inch notebook in the same price range at the time of this writing.

The price tag for this notebook (1270€) may look too high, but don’t forget about display that supports resolution up to 1920x1200 and its exceptional quality. Also with this model you get Radeon HD 3650 that can be used for playing most of new games but not on highest settings. This graphics card can “maybe” be overclocked but that is something that we don’t encourage you to do. Bear in mind that there are different configurations of Dell Studio 17 available with same quality build, so if you don’t care that much about good display you can change it and get lower price for notebook with similar characteristics.

This is an effective desktop replacement with a glorious big, high-resolution screen and good sound capabilities. It works fast and efficiently. In fact, the only part of the package that doesn't impress entirely is the touchscreen. It's not bad, exactly, but not as responsive as it could be. If you have a touch-sensitive phone like the Google Nexus One or the iPhone, it may disappoint using the multi-touch screen here because it's not as quick to respond as it should be. The keyboard is too spongy for comfortable typing, but this is one of only a small number of disappointments on a big, powerful machine.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Daha fazla tüketime ihtiyaç duymayan ve daha uzun aktarım hatlarına sahip Core Duo ve Core Solo işlemcilerin yeni nesli. Core Duo dizanynına ek olarak 4. bir decoder, güçlendirilmiş SSE unitesi ve ek Aritmetik mantık ünitesi ( ALU ) mevcut.

Core 2 Duo Laptop işlemcileri masa üstü işlemcilerle benzer. Sadece daha düşük voltaj ile çalışmakta (0.95 Volt - 1188 Volt) ve daha düşük frontside bus saat hızına sahip (1066 MHz karşı 667 MHz). Aynı hıza sahip olsalarda laptop Core 2 Duo işlemcileri masa üstü versiyonlarına oranla daha düşük frontside bus ve yavaş hard disklerinden ötürü 20 - 25% daha yavaş.

T8300: Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 ilk lansmanı yapıldığında hızlı sayılan işlemcilerden biri idi. 3 MB level 2 Cache kapasitesine sahip.

T6500:

Giriş seviyesi Penryn tabanlı dual core işlemci. 2MB Level 2 Cache kapasitesine sahip ve FSB hızı 800 MHz. T6500’e benzesede VT-x fonksiyonlarından yoksun.

Intel Core i7:

720QM: Core i7-720QM, 2009 yılı içerisinde karşımıza Core i7 Quad çekirdeğin en yavaş üyesi olarak karşımıza çıkıyor. 1.6 ile 2.8 GHz aralığındaki saat hızı ile yavaş bir 4 çekirdekli işlemci olmakla beraber hızlı bir tek çekirdekli işlemci olmanın özelliklerinin avantajlarına sahip. Daha hızlı Core i7 işlemcilerle kıyaslandığında 720QM sadece 6MB L3 Cache kapasitesine sahip.

Intel Core i5:

520M: I7-640M ile kıyaslanıldığında i5-520M sadece 3 MB L3 Cache kapasitesibe ve 2.4 – 2.93 GHz aralığında saat hızına sahip. Hyperthreading sayesinde 4 komut eş zamanlı olarak işlenebilmekte. GMA HD 3150 ile beraber DDR3 bellek kontrolörü de pakete dahil.

Sınıfınınfen hafif subnotebooklarından biri ve taşınması gerçekten çok kolay. Bu hafiflikte bir laptop bulmaktan gerçekten çok zor. 7 – 9 inç ekran boyutu bu sınıf için ideal.

3.655 kg:

Bu laptop diğer notebooklarla kıyaslandığında ortalamanın üzerinde bir ağırlığa sahip. Bu yüzden özellikle masa üstü değişim laptopları bu sınıfa girmekte.
