The addition of an optional TouchScreen display is also welcome for those willing to pay for the upgrade. The problem with the Inspiron 17 though is the graphics and display. Relying on the integrated graphics means that system is not capable of 3D gaming and the panel uses a below average resolution for a 17-inch display.

However, if you can spare $200, I'd bump up your purchase to the HP Pavilion dv7-4183cl, the Editors' Choice for desktop replacement laptops. It has Blu-ray and a discrete graphics chip if you're looking to do some light gaming. If you're willing to downgrade to a 15.6-inch screen and a slower processor, then the Samsung R580-JBB2, complete with WiMax, WiDi, and Blu-ray is an excellent option.

While it doesn’t blow the competition away it holds its own with other similarly priced and similarly configured desktop replacements. But a higher-resolution display would be a welcome upgrade, as would a Blu-ray player. An hour or two more of battery life would sweeten the deal. If you want a bit more graphics muscle, fuller sounding audio, and a durable metallic finish, the HP dv7-6143cl is the way to go, though it’ll cost you $120 more.

Also, input devices fall short of the competition as well – the touchpad is stiff and has suboptimal gliding surface while the keyboard has that cheap feeling and short key travel. Dell: Dell, kişisel bilgisayarlar üreten, satan, pazarlayan, geliştiren ve destek sağlayan çok uluslu bir teknoloji şirketidir. Texas merkezli şirket dünya genelinde 82700 kişiye iş imkanı sunmakta. 2006 yılında şirket Alienware’i satın aldı. Çoğu ülkede laptoplar direk Dell tarafından satılmakta ve farklı konfigrasyon seçenekleri sunulmakta. 2007 yılında (IDC tarafından yapılan araştırmaya göre) ki Pazar payları: HP 18.9 %, Dell 16.4 %, Acer 9.9 %, Lenovo 7.5 %, Apple 5.7 %
Bu tür grafik kaetları oyunlar için pek ideal değil. Eğer bir oyunu çalıştıracak olurlarsa ya grafiksel hatalarla ya da düşük frame oranlarıyla çalıştırabilirler. Oyuncular için uygun değiller. Ofis ve internet ise oyunların aksine bu GPU lar için sorun değil.
ATI Radeon Xpress X1270: Radeon Xpress X1270 (RS690M) notebooklar için AMD tarafından iyi bir fiyat/performans oranı için optimize edilmiş bir grafik kartı. X700 tasarımı üzerine yapılandırılmış bir kart.

AMD Turion 64 X2: AMD Turion 64 X2, Intel Core Duo’ya karşı pozisyon alabilmesi için 17 Mayıs 2006 da tanıtıldı. Mevcut tüketimi Centrino-Du notebooklardan fazla değil ( ATI Xpress ve Mobility Radeon X300 ile TL-45). Bu aynı batarya ömrü ve fan fonksiyonlarının beklenebileceği anlamına geliyor ( aynı chipset ile). Ama performansı T2300 ‘ün yüzde 20 kadar altında (1.66 GHz), bunun sebebi ise daha düşük L2 Cache’ye sahip oluşu ( Core Duo 2048 Kbyte paylaşımlı L2 Cache sahip). Yine de performansı yeterli.
