Overall, I think a great premium midrange phone needs to have five strong pillars: design and build, display experience, performance and software, camera, and battery life. And honestly, the Xiaomi 17T scores either an A or A-minus in almost all of these areas. The design is comfortable, the display is excellent, performance is the best in its class, battery life is strong, and the Leica-tuned camera system and the 5x telephoto camera gives this phone a clear edge over the competition. So, under one lakh in Nepal, I think the Xiaomi 17T might just be the best value-for-money phone to buy right now.

The Dimensity 8500-Ultra handles everyday tasks, multitasking and gaming comfortably, while its impressive sustained performance ensures the phone remains stable during longer workloads. Battery life is equally reassuring, with the large 6,500mAh silicon-carbon battery easily lasting a full day and often stretching beyond that for moderate users. That said, the Xiaomi 17T is not without compromises. Buyers looking for the most powerful chipset available at this price may feel that Xiaomi has prioritised cameras over outright performance. The overarching theme here is that the Xiaomi 17T shares a great deal of features with its Pro sibling. So many, in fact, that my recommendation is firmly to forgo the Pro and save some cash with the standard model. You still get brilliant battery life, a pixel-perfect display, and that fantastic 5x telephoto camera – plus the rest of the cameras are great, too. More to the point, the issues that plague the Xiaomi 17T are, for the most part, flaws of the Pro model, too: the software is fussy, but universal across Xiaomi phones; the 17T Pro uses the same fiberglass on the rear (albeit with an aluminium frame) and, as is the case across the smartphone spectrum this year, prices have increased. So of the two, the Xiaomi 17T is firmly my favourite. As for how it compares to the rest of the competition? Well, that 5x telephoto camera is doing a lot of heavy lifting, but it is a unique feature that the chief players in this price range can’t match. If you favour photography above all else, the Xiaomi 17T is well worth your consideration.

The Xiaomi 17T provides more of a meaningful upgrade over its predecessor, with an improved camera array, stronger battery life and more stylish colour choices. Against key rivals, performance feels a little lacking, though, and I’m still not sold fully on HyperOS. The performance here is more in line with traditional mid-range handsets, such as the Nothing 4a Pro and the Google Pixel 10a, although it is somewhat above the Honor 600 in some respects. I think the other choices have a better skin of Android with less clutter, which makes a real difference. With this in mind, there’s a lot to like here that makes this the best T-suffixed non-Pro phone from Xiaomi yet – I’m just not sure it’s as much of a flagship killer as they may tout it to be. I do wish Xiaomi had improved on the placement of the fingerprint sensor from the Xiaomi 15T Pro. It's still located too low at the bottom of the screen, which can be awkward to reach. And while the 17T has an Always-On Display, you can't actually leave it permanently on so it's not really always on, I guess. The 17 Pro can be configured to do so, but it doesn't appear to be an LTPO display that can drop down to 1Hz to conserve power, so Xiaomi doesn't enable it by default to save power.

The Xiaomi 17T is a very easy phone to like. It gets a lot of the fundamentals right and then throws in a few genuinely standout features on top. The display is excellent, battery life is superb, and the camera setup is arguably among the best in this particular class, especially when it comes to zoom photography. The upgraded 5x telephoto camera alone gives the 17T a noticeable edge over many similarly-priced rivals and even makes it feel surprisingly close to its Pro sibling in actual day-to-day camera use. Performance is solid, too. The Dimensity 8500 Ultra might not be a true flagship-tier chipset, but it is more than powerful enough for everyday use and gaming alike. HyperOS 3 also feels mature and polished overall, even if Xiaomi's refresh rate implementation still isn't quite perfect. The issue is that the Xiaomi 17T exists in an incredibly competitive market segment, with Xiaomi's other phones partially responsible for that. The phone simply feels a bit too expensive for what it offers. At around €750, buyers are fully justified in expecting fewer compromises. The plastic frame and USB 2.0 port are easier to overlook, but the relatively slow 67W charging is a much harder pill to swallow when Xiaomi has cheaper devices with notably faster charging solutions already on the market. None of this makes the Xiaomi 17T a bad phone. Quite the opposite, actually. It is a very competent and well-rounded upper-midranger with an unusually capable camera setup and excellent battery endurance. We just think Xiaomi could have positioned it a little more aggressively price-wise.
