MacBook Pro with M5 Max Review: This Is Better Than Your Desktop

In the title of this review, I said that “this is better than your desktop,” which might be a bit of an overstatement for a small number of you. Yes, if you’ve got a top-end spec Mac Studio with the M3 Ultra, that statement is less definitive. But I know that folks who bought that machine probably didn’t all get it fully tricked out. A majority of people are using older desktop computers, and I’m certain a large number of you are using computers much older than the M3 Ultra. So I stand by that statement with just a slight clarification: for most of you, this computer is better than your desktop — a lot better. Apple often gets a lot of flak for what is characterized as a “walled garden” approach to both its hardware and software design. I can see how PC enthusiasts, especially, probably look at what Apple does with particular disdain, as they like being able to be in control of their machines. But on the opposite side of that coin, there are clearly benefits to Apple’s approach.

The only thing you'll need to take into account is the price and availability. Apple's laptops aren't cheap but vs the best Windows laptops for productivity and creator workloads, the M5 Max is on a whole other level.

The M5 Max MacBook Pro is Apple’s fastest portable workstation and close to its fastest Mac. This laptop is for users who don’t want any compromises with performance–it delivers. While it provides incrementally faster CPU speed compared to the M4 Max, it does have a drastically faster SSD. For M2 or M3 Max MacBook Pro users, it’s definitely worth consideration. M4 Max owners could take a pass, but if you’re doing a lot of disk-intensive tasks, you will noticeably benefit from an upgrade. However, the rumors of the M6 MacBook Pro upgrade give buyers pause. The 20th anniversary laptop is rumored to feature an OLED touchscreen display, which would be an upgrade from the current mini LED technology, along with a new, slimmer design. If your needs aren’t pressing, it might be worth it to hold off until the end of the year.

But, let's be realistic: Even in its base model, this isn't a laptop for the masses.

Apple M5 Max 40-Core GPU:
Şu anki yüksek kalite masa üstü ekran kartları ile (7900 veya X1900 gibi) kıyaslanılabilirler. Hemen hemen aynı çekirdeğe sahip olsalarda, clock hızları farklı olduğu için biraz yavaş kaldıkları aşikar. Yeni oyunlar ( F.E.A.R., Company of Heroes gibi) yüksek çözünürlük ve full detaylarda çalışacaktır.
